PADR Modifies Ignition Rules To Include Multi-Coil Systems and Starting Line Rev Limiters

Officials at Pro Alcohol Drag Racing (PADR) have announced an adjustment to rules that govern the ignition systems on Pro Alcohol Funny Cars running at PADR events.

Effective immediately, multi-coil – distributor-less, direct ignition systems will be legal at PADR Events. In addition, ignition components limiting start line engine rpm will also be approved for use in PADR Series events.

After being approached by several teams that have switched to the multi-coil – Distributor-less Ignition systems, and those that incorporate starting line engine rpm limiting equipment, it became clear that a second look was needed at including these components in the PADR Rules Package.

Many elements were considered in the final judgment to allow the newer Ignition products to be run at PADR Events.

After close consultation with teams that have made the switch, and knowledgeable industry professionals, it became clear that these systems did not present threats of runaway technology, performance, or costs.

A number of teams were comfortable with, and preferred the muti-coil direct ignition systems over the traditional Magneto systems.

Additionally, teams that employ a two-step system to control starting line rpm also made a successful case for their inclusion into the PADR Series rules package. The only restriction to the RPM Limiting System is that it must be activated and deactivated at the starting line – with the clutch pedal.

“Our first priority is to keep costs under control,” said Kevin Hool, Director Of Operations for the PADR. “The traditional Magneto systems and the multi coil – Direct Ignition Systems are priced relatively close and performance between the two systems remains equal at this point. Therefore, it was agreed to allow the new systems to be run.”

In an effort to maintain stability – no other rule changes are being considered at this time.
